Thinking about Motherhood

Having just celebrated Mother’s Day with my daughters who are now mothers themselves, I felt a great sense of gratitude for our family and all the many wonderful qualities of motherhood that are expressed.

But many families are not be experiencing a sense of love, joy and security at the moment.   I am particularly thinking of those in war torn Syria and in drought-ridden Somalia. The media news shows heartbreak, grief and despair that it hard to watch. Their need for a sense of mothering, for love and care, security and protection is so evident and my prayers for the world have been to know that there is one Mother all of us have and that is God who is our Father-Mother.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in Science and Health ‘Love, the divine Principle is the Father and Mother of the universe, including man.’

Our divine Mother enfolds each of us in love and safety, in strength, wisdom, and tenderness and is ever present. God’s love for us is all encompassing and we can affirm in our prayers that as children of God we are never separated from this sense of motherhood.

So as we pray for our own families and families round the world, we can be reassured that God is ever present and his help is real and effective.
