My reason for existing...

A much-loved quote from Mrs. Eddy’s writings is often in thought as I go about my daily activities. Our Leader writes in Miscellany, “I am able to impart truth, health and happiness, and this is my rock of salvation and my reason for existing”. Sometimes, I’m not quite sure how to go about imparting truth, health and happiness, but I am learning that it is in simple, daily contact with individuals that opportunities to impart happiness are to be found, if we just look for them. For many months now I have made a point of actively looking for these opportunities to extend fellowship to those with whom I come into contact... be it the girl at the supermarket check-out, the young man in the pet shop where I get our bird seed, or the elderly man selling vegetables at our local market…human contact is everywhere, providing ample opportunity to impart happiness and fellowship. Recently, our elder son purchased a sofa and arm-chairs from a local furniture store. He asked me to accompany him, and It took many visits, with endless deliberation over fabrics, before his order was finalised. The Manageress was patience personified, and our son was delighted with the eventual purchase. It seemed natural for me to return to the store afterwards to thank the Manageress for her patience and support over many weeks, and in my gratitude I found myself saying, “I’m so pleased with our son’s purchase, I could hug you!” With that, the lady stepped forward and said, “Please, let me give YOU a hug…you and your son have been such a pleasure to deal with!” As you can imagine, I left the store with a smile on my face and a warm glow in my heart! Jesus instructed us to “go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature”. As I see it, one way of obeying our Master’s instruction is to go out into our own respective worlds, reaching out in love and fellowship to those we meet on our daily rounds. This certainly gives one a “reason for existing”.
