HEALING CHURCH SERVICES

Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health, “The ‘still, small voice’ of scientific thought reaches over continent and ocean to the globe’s remotest bound”.

Many years ago, before our children were born, I accompanied my husband on a business trip to India. We were there for three months, and it was an exciting time for us...we were based in a five-star hotel, and when my husband wasn’t working, we were able to explore many parts of the country, immersing ourselves in India’s history and traditions.

One morning, I woke up feeling very unwell. Although it was a Sunday, my husband had to be out all day at work, and I was left alone in our hotel room. I was filled with fear, and felt very far from home. I had brought my Bible, Science and Health and Hymnal with me on the trip, together with some Christian Science literature, and in my hour of need I reached out to my Father- Mother for help and comfort.

As I prayed, I recalled it was a Sunday morning, and it suddenly occurred to me that Christian Science church services would be in progress during the day throughout the world. The truths in that week’s Bible Lesson Sermon were pouring out “over continent and ocean to the globe’s remotest bound”... including India, and right into our hotel bedroom in Poona!

At that moment, I had a wonderful sense of being actively included in those healing services, of being at one with other Christian Scientists in the world as they gathered for their Sunday

service. I recalled the day of Pentecost in the Book of Acts, when the disciples came together “with one accord, in one place”. I began studying the Lesson Sermon as I lay in bed, just rejoicing that I was part of church on that sunny morning in India, at one withthestructureofTruthandLove. Mrs.Eddy’sdefinitionof CHURCH seemed particularly relevant to me at that moment: “...whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle”. Our church is a church without walls, whose message is going out to heal and bless the world.

When my husband returned to the hotel that evening, I was well and happy, and we enjoyed a hearty meal in the hotel dining- room!

Mrs. Eddy writes, ‘The rays of infinite Truth, when gathered into the focus of ideas, bring light instantaneously...” Those “rays of infinite Truth” certainly reached me on that day in India, and for this healing, and for everything that Christian Science means to me, I am forever grateful.
