Finding a new place to call home

One of my favourite hymns includes this line,  "Pilgrim on earth, home and heaven are within thee".   I found much inspiration in this idea some time ago when we were thinking of moving.

Adam Dickey, one of the workers in Mary Baker Eddy's household, once wrote,  "When an idea begins to work in thought, it furnishes therein all that is necessary for its establishment, expression, protection and nourishment".  Years ago, I lived with this truth virtually every day, as I prayed to see the establishment and unfoldment of our new home.

About 10 years ago, it came to us very clearly that it was time to move from our family home in Cobham, where we had lived for 37 years.  After much deliberation, we decided to sell our house and land to a local developer.  There were many frustrating delays and red tape to deal with along the way, but we stayed with Adam Dickey's promise that "when an idea begins to work in thought (in this case, the idea of home) it furnishes therein ALL that is necessary for its establishment..."

We could see so clearly that the idea of our future home was ALREADY complete in Mind, with every detail of the home already established and in place - we just had to trust that fact, and watch it take shape in a practical way.  There is a second part of Adam Dickey's quote which was enormously helpful when dealing with suggestions of delay and obstruction.  When speaking of the unfoldment of an idea, he writes,  "You cannot push it or lead it, you can only follow, and it proceeds on its way as unconscious of OPPOSITION as some clear star is unconscious of the drifting clouds which hide it but for a moment".

Having completed the sale of our land to the developers, the Land Director asked us if we had begun house-hunting.  When we said we hadn't yet found anywhere suitable, he told us he was on the verge of selling a plot of land with planning consent for one house in Leatherhead, and would we be interested in it?  Within half-an-hour, we were standing in this little plot of land in a quiet corner of the village, and immediately we knew this was the site of our future home.  The developers were delighted, as it was effectively a straight swop - we would sell them our land in Cobham, and they would build us a new house on their piece of land in Leatherhead!

Fast forward several years, and today we are happily settled in our new home, our hearts filled with gratitude for this wonderful evidence of divine Love's provision.  When we first started thinking of moving all those years ago, I remember sitting down one day and making a list of all the spiritual qualities and aspects of home which I dearly hoped to see incorporated one day in our future home - and all those qualities are now evidenced in abundance in our present dwelling!

We read in the Bible,  "Prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it!"
